Artist Statement

Recreating the world through artworks has been a part of my life since childhood, but piecing it together with fabric did not begin until the 1990’s. At that point, cloth in all shapes and colors, prints and sizes began to shake my creative world. To master a new direction, I learned special skills and techniques, combined with my fine arts training, to transform fabric pieces into my complex pictorial visions.

Since then, quilts in all forms have become an integral part of my life. I read, think, and dream about 3-layered constructions constantly, which leads to planning new works a little bit every day. I am an illustrator who enjoys visualizing a story of things seen, remembered or imagined, creating a figurative narrative which viewers can relate to and understand. I call my style Representational. Once the sketching, cutting and stitching begin, a single project may require as little as a few days or as much as a year to complete. Designing and assembling a new pictorial effort can be immensely demanding and occasionally tedious. Always the final product is worth my effort, providing a profound sense of accomplishment. 

Most of all, becoming a professional quilt artist has showered me with new experiences and acquaintances. The appearance of my work in quilt shows across the United States and abroad, and the occasional “Best of Show” or “Viewer’s Choice” award, is satisfying. What is the most fulfilling is realizing that I am part of a great artistic movement, in which the past, present, and future all combine to establish a cohesive statement.
